13 Peaks – Maclear’s Beacon – 11 Sept (Intermediate to Strenuous)

We have climbed, trekked, scrambled and hiked our way through the 13 Peaks challenge and the Grand Finale is finally here! It is time to take a hike up to the highest point on Table Mountain: MacClear’s Beacon.

Situated on the eastern plateau of the mountain, McClear’s Beacon consists of a man made rock structure and towers at 1086m above sea level. The beacon offers 360 degree views and is still used by cartographers today. Needless to say it has become a major attraction for avid hikers!

We’ll take on the challenge via Skeleton Gorge and follow Smuts Track all the way to the top. This makes for an epic adventure as we’ll scramble up the gorge through the forest canopy and reach the mountain plateau.

With a stop at the Hely-Hutchinson reservoir we’ll continue and meet interesting rock features, views as far as the eyes can see and Fynbos for your delight. Reaching the summit will surely be a great accomplishment and one for the hiking bucket list!

After the summit we’ll traverse across the plateau and make our way down Nursery Ravine and back into Kirstenbosch gardens, where you can relax for the rest of the afternoon or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants within the gardens! A visit to the Boomslang Canopy is also on the menu!

Elevation gain: 1,321m

Difficulty: Intermediate to strenuous – involves hiking for a long distance, a steep ascent up Skeleton Gorge, a gradual climb up to the beacon and the descent down Nursery Ravine.

What’s included: Qualified and experienced Guide, Wilderness First Responder, Safety in numbers aspect, a warm beverage and rusks.
