Basically…. Basically….
This is Apex. These photographs tell a story that This is Apex. These photographs tell a story that statistics and management plans never can. Apex is now alone, wandering the Fish Hoek and Glencairn area after what appears to have become an untenable situation within his troop. He has a blind eye, has endured repeated challenges, and has now become another dispersing male trying to survive in a human-dominated landscape. But before he became “the dispersing male”, he was a father. After his mate died following a suspected poisoning, Apex did something many people don’t realise baboon males are capable of. He cared for their young daughter, staying with her for weeks. The little female later found on the roof of Ocean View Police Station was his offspring. Looking at these photographs, don’t see a problem animal. See an individual who has experienced loss, conflict and enormous upheaval. We often hear that baboons are being “managed”. Yet too often that management seems focused on reducing inconvenience for people, rather than asking what these animals themselves are experiencing. Some are pushed into impossible situations where the only options become isolation, conflict, or death. Apex is exactly the sort of baboon who should be considered for the enclosure if it is genuinely intended as a welfare intervention. I hope he is given that chance. Every dispersing male has a story. Apex’s story reminds us that they are not simply names on a management report. They are sentient, social animals with families, histories, relationships and lives that matter.
